Sweaty Steak and Early Butterflys
May 31st, 2004

Dave Matthews Butterfly TeaseDave often teases songs long before they become an 'official' tune to fans. A good example of this was the early teases of "Oh" from Some Devil. One of the first times Dave teased the song live, the crowd actually laughed at the lyrics thinking dave was being funny.

Butterfly, a tune Dave completed for the movie Because of Winn-Dixie, may have been teased as early as 1996. This short clip with only a single line of partial lyrics could have been a simple impromptu scat, or could be a sign that the song found its roots far earlier than previously believed.

Listen to a recording of Butterfly from 12/20/03 Dave and Friends

"You ever eat your sweat? Tastes kinda like a steak, minus the meat. Just put the salt on it. Big juicy steak"

(someone yells for dueling Banjos)

(Dave scats dueling banjos)

"Can't do it, don't know it yet."
