Carter and the Crickets and the Silver Spoon
March 29th, 2004

Starplex Amphitheater had been known for its in-house cricket over-population for weeks before DMB reached their show. They played six songs, then set about a Jimi Thing. The crickets became too much for Carter, and he walked off the stage in the middle of the song.

The boys didn't know what to do, dave played a few chords for a few minutes and boom. He whipped out Spoon. The track had been released on Under The Table and Dreaming four months previous, and crickets had forced its first live exposure.

Dave told the story in his own words at the first Dave and Tim show of last year:

"I don't know but a little bug reminded me of it:

We were playing in Texas once, I don't think you were with us Tim--but there were a lot of crickets. There were so many crickets that they were like this deep underneath the drum kit, underneath the drum riser and in the kick drum there. Like this deep. It was kind of creepy, it was kind of creepy. But then they were like, walking up my shirt.

And they were attacking the drums the most, so there was a mutiny at that point. Cause' uhm. I admittedly, I probably would have done the same thing, but there were just too many bugs for Carter to continue. So that had to end for a moment.

All I remember from it, though I had a few in my shirt. I had a few trying to get through my arm pit. But I was ignoring it, because ya know I'm from Africa and I can take that kind of stuff. Y'all are like: "Eww! Its a bug!" "It's a bug? Exactly." Its a fricken' bug, man what the hell's it going to do to you? Its a frickin' bug. Anyway the one most interesting cricket was one that just walked up the microphone then stood right in front of me right here.

And just stared at me, for the song. You know it was kind of unnerving, you know like when someone has an elastic band pointed at you? Even if you know that they're not going to let it go. It still makes you like...ughh...but I had to sing. And the cricket was right there like, "I could jump right in your face, fuck up the whole gig...but its more fun."
