Today is President's day, a holiday marked originally to celebrate George Washington's Birthday. Today we use it to celebrate all men who have been successful in attaining the United States' most coveted political position. In honor of this loosely celebrated national holiday, we look briefly at Dave Matthews' political involvement over the past several years.
With his rise to fame, Dave has served as a politically involved and outspoken entertainer. He appeared on Politically Incorrect in 1997, (the same year he played President Clinton's Inaugural celebration,) and also in 1999 speaking out in favor of medical marijuana.
Soon after the start of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" Dave posted a letter on the official Dave Matthews web site with his take on the conflict. In this letter he comments on the "...killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis..." which was picked up by pundit Bill O'Reilly, who called Dave out on his show a month later. In his interview with Rolling Stone, Dave made it clear that removing President Bush from office was chief among his priorities.
Dave is personally and financially involved in supporting a variety of non-profit ventures. In the out takes from his recent RS interview he has mentions he's been a large contributor to the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He sits on the board of directors for Farm Aid and helped establish the Bama Works Foundation which sponsors a long list of charitable organizations.
