Dave Matthews: The Artist

artistdaveDave Matthews has recently twittered that he had been, “been scribbling album art.” For the upcoming album cover for Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King which is scheduled to release June 2, 2009. Some fans were delighted to hear this news on the forums, but this is not Dave’s first attempt at participating directly with the artistic conception and direction of a DMB album cover.

In fact, Dave has collaborated with Thane Kerner on at least five other studio covers which include Stand Up, Before These Crowded Streets, Busted Stuff, Crash, and Under The Table and Dreaming.

In conjunction with Thane Kerner, Dave even collaborated with his sister Jane Matthews on creating the cover for Crash. Dave Matthews also worked with Thane Kerner, Wyndsor Taggart Hug, and most importantly Stefan Lessard to help create the cover for Stand Up.

Not only has Dave worked on most of the previous studio CD covers, but his artistic designs have also been famously duplicated for merchandise such as t-shirts, tickets, bumper stickers, and other miscellaneous items (hence the creation of the firedancer).

Before becoming the famously known talented singer/songwriter that he is, Dave Matthews once thought of becoming an artist first, but plans for going to an art school never materialized. Dave has said of that time, "I'd draw and wander, and draw and wander."

Fortunately, for his music fans, he turned all of his attention back to playing music.
