Black Eyed Peas Invade, Destroy Jimi Thing
Rather unexpectedly, fans were greeted with a guest appearance from none other than the Black Eyed Peas during the Dave Matthews Band set at the Outside Lands music festival.
Fans are currently debating whether APL and Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas were invited or simply decided to crash the end of Jimi Thing when they jumped on stage about three quarters of the way through the evening set on Saturday. Perhaps they were trying to make up for cancelling opening for DMB in 2004 to attend the MTV Music Awards.
Once on stage, Fergie began singing Sublime's "Santeria" and began chanting "The Dave Matthews Band" repeatedly in the middle of a jam. APL challenged Dave to a break dancing contest. Watch the video.
The majority of discussion across DMB forums seem to be panning the appearance. Someone cared enough to create an account on Ants to post simply, "Worst idea ever." In the WDS forums, we had "That was absolutly bad. nothing good came out of that. Nobody better try to defend that, or pretend to like it." Still other postings were less kind.
The performance was webcast as part of the first major music live event for video streaming giant, YouTube.
Still, some are defending the show as still great. Calling it an energy-filled opportunity for the band to have some fun at a festival while pointing to the strong Watchtower closer with Robert Randolph. Rolling Stone saw nothing awkward about the appearance
Some have mentioned that Dave's voice was in a bit of a rough way. Marcus Miller tweeted that both Dave and Carter were in the studio with Herbie Hancock the day before, but it is unclear whether that included vocal work.
Whether you were there in person or watched the webcast, we'd love to hear your opinion about the show and Outside Lands in general.
