On Sunday, March 13th Dave Matthews Band's record label, RCA hosted a private release party in Charlottesville, VA. In attendance were Boyd Tinsley, Coran Capshaw, representatives from RCA and Red Light Management.
A few DMB fan site reps were also invited. This article summarizes their reviews. See links to their reviews at the bottom of this article.
A few rumors floating around the fan community were confirmed at the party. Both Dr. Dre and Jay-Z were seriously considered as producers by the band but in the end were not chosen. Stefan had alluded to the possibility of Dr. Dre producing this new DMB album back in July of 2004.
This past Boston's 92.5 The River broke the name as "Act One, Stand Up." The album title is simply, "Stand Up." (Discussion of the title). Butch Taylor does play keyboards on some of the tracks on "Stand Up."
The loss of the "Act One" portion of the title does not change the fact that according to an interview in Rolling Stone, over 25 songs have been recorded for the album. A second cd of b-sides is possible, or some of these tunes could show up on tour.
The cover art for "Stand Up" will feature a chrome firedancer on a black background. The artwork was designed by both DMB bassist Stefan Lessard and Thane Kerner. Kerner was in charge of art direction and design on Before These Crowded Streets and did the cover design on Crash. He also did the cover artwork on Busted Stuff.
The most stunning news delivered from the recording session was that on the track "Steady As We Go" Dave plays the piano and sings solo before bringing the rest of the band into the song. He does not play guitar on this track. Carter also tickles the ivories on this track as well.
Other interesting instrument switching: Stefan Lessard plays the guitar on a track, and Boyd Tinsley picks up the mandolin.
Only six songs were confirmed to be on the album:
- American Baby (the first single, to be released 3/18/05)
- Dream Girl (second single, features hip-hop percussion)
- Hunger For The Great Light (Stefan Lessard's tune)
- Everybody Wake Up (Link goes to mp3 clip)
- Steady As We Go (Dave and Carter on piano!)
- Hello Again (From the 2004 summer tour, link goes to mp3 clip)
The rest of the DMB song titles we've been tracking are not confirmed and apparently the album is still not complete.
