Following a performance from legend Jerry Lee Lewis, Dave Matthews played a fan friendly solo setlist that included songs from Some Devil, a cover from the Dave and Friends tour and two unreleased songs.
One of the two unreleased tracks, Butterfly was teased repeatedly over the 2004 summer tour, including the recent 9/4 and 9/5 Gorge shows. This was only the fifth time Dave has performed the song live. The first was 12/20/03, with the first complete performance at the Oakland Dave and Friends show on 1/16/04.
Butterfly was written for Because of Winn Dixie, an unreleased film with Dave playing a drifter who works at a pet shop. Dave's character Otis uses the song as a lullaby to bond with a girl and her stray dog. In March Dave described the movie Billings, MT's Zone 96.3 FM:
“It’s a sweet children’s story. It’s about lonely people, people who are lost and people that are sad, and about a little girl who brings them together. So it’s one of those good stories, wholesome stuff. Not a lot of crack smoking in this movie. Not a lot of edgy urban scenes… not going to find that in this movie. But I think Hollywood has got that stuff covered.”
Dave debuted the song, Glory, Glory Hallelujah after introducing it as a short piece he wrote for an unreleased movie. He was either referencing the previously mentioned Winn Dixie, or perhaps the long troubled film Where The Red Fern Grows, which marked his first foray into feature films. The title to the song sparked initial confusion online, causing some to believe that Dave had performed Battle Hymn of the Republic.
Dave also performed several songs from Some Devil. Save Me sported a picked intro that sounded very much like a traditional Recently intro on steroids. The picking recurs over the course of the song.
