Mix Online has reported that just before 2005 gave way Dave Matthews recorded new music at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, WA. Apparently he was working with John Alagia.
Alagia has done a number of projects for the band, most recently production work on Weekend On the Rocks Here's his discography and here's a little Bio on him.
Reading the article on Mix you might get the sense that Dave was off recording tunes for himself for some kind of new solo project ala' Some Devil . This would probably be the best thing ever. Ants is saying no, Dave was just warming up some tunes for the next DMB album due to begin recording in March.
The suggestion that Dave has started work recording for the next DMB album on his own goes against a quote from 2005 where he said he hoped to go into the studio without any material. If the guys aren't getting together for another three months, this would be jumping the gun just a little bit.
What makes this even more strange is that the idea of Dave working on DMB material on his own. A lot of fans saw Stand Up as a method for Dave to give back some control over the musical direction of the band following his icy-hot stunting with Everyday. Given Dave's previous comments, it seemed that SU2 would be a repeat of 2005's "experimentation" with Mark Batson.
Regardless, it makes sense that if Dave Matthes felt like recording music he would head into the studio and get it done. Whether it was earmarked for DMB or just his own personal stash? Impossible to know without asking him or one of the guys in the studio the other day.
1/10/06 - Update: Dave has been into the studio more than once, and was even joined by LeRoi on at least one occasion. Stephan and Carter have hooked up for pre-production on the album in Virginia. So, it's not just Dave on his own.
