DMB Weekend Festival In Development:
Acreage Update

March 12th, 2004

Size Does Matter

According to a spokesperson for National Parks Service, there are no plans for any type of concert, festival or major event on the portion of Governors Island they control. This area includes twenty-two acres of land primarily in the center of the island. They oversee prominent structures on the island, such as Fort Jay and Castle Williams.

Where Could The Festival Take Place?

Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC) controls the 150 acres of land and 32 acres of underwater land. According to the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research, or NY Star, part of the terms of sale of the island from the US Government to the city and state of New York include that "fifty acres must be dedicated to public benefit, including educational, civic, cultural uses, the National Monument itself, and an esplanade that will circle the perimeter of the island."

Fuel to the Fire

To draw speculation even closer to the possibility of a DMB Festival over the July 4th weekend, the group also states that "It is anticipated that the island will be open for greater public visitation during the summer of 2004."

So far a spokesperson for GIPEC has been unavailable for comment. More information will be posted here as soon as it is available.
