Why Dave Matthews' New Song Won't Be On New Album
Ayhee Lyrics
Februrary 13th, 2006

Sperm WhaleDave performed the song "Ayhee" for the first time on the Dave and Friends Cruise. If you haven't heard it yet, grab it from our forums and listen while you read this. (requires registration)

Will Ayhee Be on the New Studio Album from DMB?

There are a couple of reasons to pay attention to Ayhee. It is the first new song that's been debuted on tour since Good Good Time was performed at Bonnaroo in June of 2004 and therefore constitutes a road test.

Dave Matthews Band created most of the songs in its collection by practicing, evolving them night after night on the road. Many fans consider road testing songs to be a fundamental element of DMB. Before These Crowded Streets, widely held as the best studio album from the band, was similar to Stand Up in that nearly all the songs were road tested before being recorded.

The difference is that going into the Stand Up sessions, DMB had four strong songs that had undergone considerable road testing prior to studio sessions. [note: Many fans still question the decision to axe all but Hello Again from this group of songs, which had its own jam amputated at the knee.]

So this first point has prompted many to wonder whether Ayhee will appear on the next DMB album to be recorded next month. (Yes, the guys are recording a follow up to Stand Up in March.) Unfortunately there are two good reasons to suppose that Ayhee would not make the next album, each with a point of refutation.

Here's Why Not

First, Dave has said that he wanted to go into the studio empty handed. Perhaps this was because of the disruption caused by having four road tested songs that did not resonate with Batson's direction in the studio. The refutation is that Dave was already spotted in the studio with Roi and John Alagia in Seattle, and Carter and Stefan were hooked up for pre-production in Virginia.

The second reason Ayhee wouldn't make the next DMB studio album is because Dave performed it first with Dave and Friends. There is resounding certainty that Dave's solo work in Some Devil was his best creative work (exception: YNK) since the Summer So Far (2000 LWS). And there is some conjecture that Dave's creative departure from the band had some impact on the relationship between him and the rest of the band members. (Fonzy doesn't attend D+F shows).

The refutation on this point is that Good Good Time made the leap from D+F performance to Dave Matthews Band performance and Ayhee could too. Thankfully the guys have built even less precedence by dropping GGT midway through the the 2004 tour, but then artificially resuscitating it for the Vote for Change show that October. And now we had it again at the beer-dry D+F Cruise.

DMB Should Play Ayhee

But what a shame it would be if Ayhee were to be orphaned the way Sugar Will was heading into Stand Up. Listening to song, it is unquestionable that Dave invested himself in developing this song both musically and lyrically prior to the performance. Without a doubt, it is a kick-ass song. But not knowing, we're left in a position similar to where we were in February of 2004.

Interpreting Ayhee Lyrics

Interpreting Dave Matthews lyrics is probably best left to the individual but now that a number of dmb torrents have been released from the D+F shows, not all of the lyrics are clear. But there are a number of references that are on Dave's favorite three subjects, God, Death and Sex--though particularly heavy on this last point.

During the intro Dave begins talking to the crowd. "Come on up and see the devil. Is everybody coming here? Is everybody gunna come up in?" Then repeated references to coming during the song, a "collection of cells" the devil on his knees, etc. etc.

Dave Matthews - Ayhee Lyrics

ayheee yeah
I'm a liar
ahyee ah yeah ha
come on now

Praise god who has many names
but the devil has many more
with the love that my mother gave me
I'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
I'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
I'm gonna drop the devil to his knees

Sometimes I wish that my people were comin'
I'd love myself, I'd find me some cover
Rain in the top the top leave me covered
It's something it's just what you crave, you know it!

ayheee yeah
I'm a liar
ahyee ah yeah
come on now

Walkin' along in this craze of confusion
Sometimes I can look
but sometimes you doubt all my steps
it's the weight that's above the shoulders
now come on, I will, come, I will, come I will
so I came

ayheee yeah
I'm a liar
ahyee ah yeah ha
come on now.

Brother, Sister
Brother, Sister

Praise god who has many names
But the devil has many more
And with the love that my mother gave me
I'm gonna drop the devil to the floor
I'm gonna drop the devil to his knees
I'm gonna drop the devil to his knees

I've seen evolution, my people have come to believe
that we are the traitors, the cheaters
We pray with this a collection of cells
We parade with ourselves

ayheee yeah
I'm a liar
ahyee ah yeah ha
come on now.

Drop the devil to his knees
Drop the devil to his knees

ayheee yeah
I'm a liar
ahyee ah yeah ha
come on now.

Somebody gonna save the world... ayhee yeah...

ayheee yeah
I'm a liar
ahyee ah yeah ha
come on now.
