Dave Matthews, David Bowie and Lil' Jon
August 23rd, 2004

There's been some confusion about what exactly has been going on with the outro to Too Much recently. DMB Almanac has been listing it with "extended scat outro with Golden Years outro and Lil' John's "YEAH! WHAT? YEAH! OK!" interpolation"

This special extended scat outro for Too Much is a combination Dave cooked up from mixing lyrics from David Bowie's Golden Years and throwing in rapper/producer Lil' Jon's "Yeah! What?! Okay!" Not a Bowie fan, or haven't heard of Lil' Jon?

David Bowie Station to Station CoverGolden Years was first released by David Bowie in 1976 in the UK on the album Station to Station. The legend is that Bowie wrote the song for Elvis Presley but that The King rejected it. The song peaked at number eight on the US Billboard charts. Dave has been inserting this song and the tune Fame into the outro of Too Much since 1996.

Lil' Jon is most commonly known for his Yeah's, What's and Okay's. What?!? You haven't heard of him? He's actually so well known for these words that he was lampooned on the Dave Chappelle's Show. Still unfamiliar? Okay! If you have turned the radio on in the past six months you've likely heard him on the Usher single Yeah!

Even after 34 weeks, Yeah! still sits at number 24 on the Billboard's Hot 100.

Clearly Dave Matthews has either been listening to a lot of Lil' Jon infused hip-hop or watching Chappelle's Show, because he has dropped this outro repeatedly over the 2004 summer tour.
