Default Disappointed? ...or not

As of now we have heard a decent sampling of the songs that will be on the new album through taping, iTunes releases, etc. I have been holding off writing anything until I heard more, but now feel ready to post my thoughts and see if anyone else feels the same way.
I, like most people, have been incredibly excited about this album. With the anticipation growing over the last year or so reaching a frenzy with the album trailer and other teases over the last few months I couldn't wait to hear full samples of what we were in for. Having heard some of these samples now I must say I am rather disappointed. Given that many of these songs we have only gotten live, that many may sound different in the studio/later on in the tour, that the anticipation and excitement about the album may have gotten peoples hopes too high, etc...etc... etc.. I am left with a feeling of apathy.
It's not that I am stuck in the UTTAD years and want only more #41s. I am ready for the band to try something new. I was excited about IOY, Shotgun, and Cornbread. I applauded their efforts in the studio to go back to their roots, but I just don't feel it.
For me, the music has always given me goosebumps. Hitting play was like walking into Disneyland. No matter how many times I have done it I can't stop feeling the magic.
Maybe the songs will grown on me. Maybe the studio versions are better. Maybe the road will iron out what just doesn't work for me, but maybe it never will. I didn't need to acclimate to LIOG or IBYU. I didn't have to force the haunting tones of The Stone into my musical likes. I didn't have to be high or drunk to enjoy new songs like So Right or Everyday. They worked, they hit that nerve, they gave me the bumps.
I am wondering if anyone else is feeling the same way. I want it to be awesome, I really do. When I watch the trailer I get excited, but when I see the 'movie' I want my money back.

Personally i feel that, from what i have heard, the band has indeed taken a step in a new direction. Its not like what we have heard before, but, in my opinion, its good stuff. I really like what we have heard and i think the album will be a very well put together piece with great flow.

also, keep in mind, it is hard to truly hear a song and every layer of it with just these tapers recordings. lets wait til June 2 to talk about the musical aspects.

Yeah I agree. In tapers versions, it's hard to pick up a lot of important aspects of a song. Personally, I'm not going to judge it until 6/2.

i'm real glad with most of what we've got so far- not as big a fan of spaceman or seven, but everything else sounds stellar so far

Isn't it a bit hard to go back to that root when you're missing a key member of it? Keep in mind that this album was put together, mostly, after 'Roi's passing. It's not going to sound like UTTAD, BTCS, or anything else. I mean, did you hear seven? Its completely new. Something that doesn't sound like anything DMB has done ever. We, all of us, need to stop comparing this album to the past, stop trying to make it an album of new halloweens, new stones, or new anythings, and just relish it for what it is.

And if you can't 'feel it,' at the very least the ghost of LeRoi, when they play Why I Am, then idk what to tell you.

Honestly, in my opinion, "Funny The Way It Is" is and instant classic. I am really digging "Spaceman", "Beach Ball" almost brought me to tears, I think it's the most DMB sounding song they have put out since "You Never Know". "Way I am" and "7" not really feeling as much, but they will get better. What I heard of "Shake Me Like A Monkey" is amazing also. So I would have to disagree with this post. Give it a chance. Dave is in a really great place right now lyrically. I think your all going to be really surprised by this album.

Nicely put man. I am definitely enjoying what I've heard so far and can't wait for the full album to come out. I'm excited about all the new tunes and I think the fact that they pushed on after LeRoi's passing is amazing.

I am honestly excited about the album. Why I Am is a great song, FTWII is good, Spaceman is good, some of the other sounds clips like SMLAM sound awesome. Can't wait for June 2nd. Seven is rough, but it is the first time it has been played live, so I am not even counting that performance or letting it sway my feelings of that song yet.
