I've just recently taken up guitar. I'm wondering if any Dave songs are easy enough for a beginner to be able to play decently? Or at least once I improve, what is a good first Dave song to learn? Thanks.

lover lay down, it's pretty repetitive and slow. tripiping billies is pretty much the same chords, just faster.
Crash is fun because it isn't too hard and you can really hear the sound of the song right away.

Trying to learn these songs depresses me because I find that I don't know all the words to a bunch of my favourite songs. And the songs which I know all the words to, I don't really know how the music behind them goes.
It is a strange experience but fun nonetheless.:boings:

If you have a capo (on seven), Stay or Leave is quite pleasant and fairly easy to pick up, though the end changes are bit challenging but you can wing it and make it sound ok. Hell just sing louder!
I always shyed away from movin up the neck cuz I never really had any formal training but once you pick up different voicings for the same chords your set.
Definitely will give props to dmbtabs.com (http://www.dmbtabs.com/) remember not to just play the easy stuff over and over or you wont get any better than that one song.

yea well all the ones u guys said that are easy to learn you're right but what song is the easiest to play almost flawlessly to learn would be a better question//.... honestly its a good stretch satellite was the first dave song i learned just play the intro over and over again its a great stretching exercise and several other dave songs have that 5 fret stretch ie warehouse #34 the riff in minarets fool to think raven first 3 notes... sure theres a couple more cant think tho.. also grey street is a good one to learn cause those 3 chord shapes are really repetitive in alot of dave songs as well , like lover lay down , billies , too much intro , lie in our graves jam , hold me down or whatever that song is called forgot i could check dont feel like it , and then lie in our graves was the second dave song i ever learned its great cause it incorporates daves rhythm and lead lines and u can hear the song develop immedietely and if u play satellite and lie in our graves till you can perfect them (perfect them as far as a beginner goes) then you will be well on your way like me! i remember christmas of 2000 me and my best friend got guitars and started learning together he quit and i stuck with it and i love playing when hes around so he beats himself up about it and wishes he didnt quit...

Digging a Ditch is the easiest in my opinion, though it requires a little strum technique and loses it's appeal quickly. Grey Street is great to learn because of the 2xx2xx, 3xx4xx ... chords, which are used in many Dave songs. As for Tripping Billies, if you practice the opening chord enough the rest will follow, but tis a stretch. I still fumble, but I'm working on it.

i had to get my metronome for "the stone" verse just to make sure i stayed in 6/8 timing and didn't add another beat or two, that was def. pretty dificult
i bought both of the "live at luther college" songbooks yesterday and I"m gonna try to learn most of tim's stuff, but i'm gonna concentrate on "stream" cause i'd love to be able to play that
so if i don't repost in this forum for about 3 months, ya'll know why now lol

i played both of them in my math class one morning, and a bunch of the people were like "whose that by?" I told them ofcourse Dave Matthews Band, and like 4 people the next day told me they went onto limewire and downloaded a bunch of their songs and said they are really good :)
the stone is fun to play too, and your right, joyride is fun, especially when playing with a drummer.
dangit i don't know, all i do know is that in the 2 hours i play everyday, at least 1 and a half of those hours is dmb stuff, just a bunch of fun tunes to play aren't they?

I strongly suggest starting with something easy like "Gravedigger" before attempting stuff like Lie In Our Graves, or Crash. Crash is a little easier to play, but almost impossible to play/sing simultaneously unless you've been playing for years. Once you get to the point where you are trying to sing along with yourself, you'll realize how freaking good dave is. All Along the Watchtower is easy. Only 4 chords and Dave plays it in A minor. You get used to his tempo changes and beat variations, too, and it'll make you realize you can spice up an easy song with some simple changes. Ants Marching was the first Dave song I ever learned how to play, fairly easy, and extremely gratifying. Same with Jimi Thing. Go early...check out his early work. Grace is Gone is another one that's easy to pick up...Stay (Wasting Time) is one I have yet to master...

that is true, but we also have to keep in mind that there are alot of barre chords in daves music, and most people who are beggining guitar have a hard time getting the finger stretch of them down.

So I'm trying to pick up guitar, but every website I go to has a lot of vocab and other mumbo jumbo that I have no idea what it all means. I understand how to read chords and tabs, very basic. I understand the finger placement on the frets and whatnot, but everything else is a blur. Is there a good website or book that anyone has used to help themselves learn guitar and guitar vocabulary? Any help would be great. Thanks...

Dave songs, anything like DMB.
Alright, the best way if you a beginner is to strum around, get to know the pic. Cortez The Killer is a great song for this, heres the whole thing.
http://www.dmbtabs.com/song.php?sid=90
Basicly just strum around, make different patters, have fun with it. If you're looking for a book, I'd just head to your closest music store, becuase I could recomend you one, but I don't know how well you know music (notes, rhythms, etc.).

well I'm looking at Proudest Monkey (http://www.dmbtabs.com/song.php?sid=33) cuz it looks super easy, but the two questions I have- its not strumming, its plucking right? and what do the numbers running along the bottom of the lowest string mean? is that a count of how long to hold the note? I have an acoustic, otherwise I'd try the 'Cortez', i just don't think it would sound anything like the way its suposed to if I tried...
The numbers at the bottom are a recomendation for what fingers to use on your left hand (if you are a righty). And its not plucking, all you gotta do is hit the string with the pic. This is a great starter song by the way, if you're looking to do songs without chords. Once you get Monkey down, more onto the next step, which I would recomend to be Loving Wings. If you have any questions or anything, feel free to hit me up with a PM.
Peace man.

So much to say is easy, and incredibly fun to play.
How long have you been playing to say that this is an easy song to play. C'mon. I learned "typical situation" first. Then Bartender, lover lay down, too much, 41, gravedigger, pig, ants marching, I'll back you up, Crash (harder than you think if you want to do it right), Oohh I almost forgot Blue water babboon farm, Grey street isnt that bad once you get his chords down. Half of playing DMB songs is playing like dave. Using his chords and what not. Once you get his style down things get easier. Oh and if you can start off by playing "the Stone" you must be a prodigy.

many of these I'm sure were already listed, but this is what I learned when I first picked up the acoustic...
Halloween...its pretty much all octave chords and bar chords so its easy as hell...fun to sing to actually.
Typical situation...pretty easy
crash into me...the easiest song in the world
bartender..played in drop d...pretty easy as well
don't drink the water..also in drop d. fun to play mixed in with bartender..example...storytellers
what you are- the lead riff after the intro is the hardest thing about this song.
last stop- pretty easy once you get the rythym down.
too much- simple
so much to say. fun as hell to play. very repetative.
dancing nacings- one of my personaly favs to play
the stone- great practice to get your fingers movin..works as a great warm up. I can play that intro for hours and never tire of it.

You don't have to be a prodigy to learn any song. It comes with practice. I'd been playing guitar for 15 years before I even tried a Dave song (The Stone). It came easy for whatever reason, but I had to practice for a while to perfect it. Prodigy-- NO, Experienced-- YES....

One of the first few I learned were Lie in Our Graves, Halloween and Warehouse. Warehouse is a blast to play once you get even just the main riff down. It's a little bit of a stretch but once you get the feel for it and get the dead notes right, it is a blast. Same for LIOG. Once you get the feel for it, it is a really, really fun song to play.. at least for me.
Edit: Check this guy's videos out. He's got like 40 instructional videos of all Dave songs. He does a fantastic job of explaining and breaking things down. I've pulled the majority of my Dave repertoire from this guy. There's another good guy floating around youtube but the name escapes me.. you'd have to poke around for him.
