When a group on a major label sends it's new CD to Rolling Stone for preliminary review, it almost certainly contains an Audio Watermark. This is data hidden in the sound file that will remain even under intense compression, i.e. mp3.
This is the RIAA's main defense against having albums leak from official sources, as they can trace back and severly punish whoever mis-handled the CD.
I found this aricticle from a company that provides audio watermarking services. If you have an interest in audio media, you may enjoy the quick read: Audio Watermarking Article (http://www.magellanhardware.co.uk/watermarking2.asp)
