Time Bomb is all I had hoped for, Squirm is fantastic, Alligator Pie is one of the coolest songs I have ever heard, Spaceman studio is amazing.

God Damn they are all incredible. I can not get over this. I can't wait to have a hard copy of this

What did you think of Tim on acoustic on Lying in the Hands of God Dan?

I have listened to Lying In The Hands Of God the most so far. I absolutely love it. Dave and Carter (?) during the chorus gives me chills and Timmy is incredible as usual. Amazing song. Amazing album.

My God I have never been on this much of a DMB high before, even after a concert

Glad I got to hear it all before it went away...that's some good stuff.

Looks like someone definitely made an oopsie when they were putting up the "new" video (which is just the one from when the fans were invited in and heard Grux->Shake Me Like a Monkey).

I still haven't heard half the album but I was sqirming repeatedly the last couple of days on youtube and I get home from work and its gone! :pissed: Then I catch Pandora through this thread for about 30 mins. which is sweet but I'm still not playing the stuff I haven't heard but now its all gone and I want more SQUIRM :pissed:

Okay at the end of You and Me there was silence for a while (20 secs maybe?) and then an instrumental started. It was not very long.

It was better for sure... Small improvements made in a lot of different places. There was more strings in My baby Blue. The Sax in the beginning of Why I Am that doesn't seem to fit was missing so that was good. Everything just sounded slightly tighter...

You and Me such a sweet sweet song, i cant stop listening to it...

Aligator Pie = Fusion of Cornbread + Bayou = Amazing

Dive In is great its another one i put on repeat for a couple runs.

I was expecting more from LITHOG but its still a good one.

Its definately the best album in YEARS.

i caught the streamearlier, and damn is this album good. lithog is probably my favorite song now. The whole song blew me away. the acoustic guitars were perfect, and the chorus kicked total ass. Squirm was also an instant classic. Baby blue has to be their most genuine studio track. grux was very pleasent and was a group effort with leroi taking the lead

cchsbigc
05-23-2009, 12:10 AM
Squirm was definitely the most badass

Wasnt the album supposed to be broadcasted on the 26th? So maybe someone made the mistake of putting it up early and then they realized that it was up and took it down. I guess we'll just have to wait three more days.

the Lillywhite sessions/BS are good too, BWGK isnt as good but it is ok, has some bad songs, its short of jams, cheesy lyrics but also great songs and solid lyrics, well structured grooves...listen to squirm and time bomb

However, our opinions coincide on this. I'm blown away by this album. I wish I could like personally thank DMB for this. Seriously, this is amazing. :kim:

Glen hasn't been with them for a while now. I think it could have something to do with the record company as well.

insanewvufan
05-25-2009, 08:17 AM
No doubt that DMB's sound has a heavy major record label tinge to it nowadays, that is why it is so great to hear them live because record companies could give two flying Fs what they play on the road.

BUT BUT BUT, Lying in The Hands of God is disgusting. Hell, this entire album is completely legitimate, any idea if that is Dave on the piano?

Hello everyone,

Been awhile since I've posted. Yet to post anything on BWGK. I'm waiting to listen to the album with my best friend on June 3rd. He introduced me to DMB when we were in 3rd grade (over 15 years ago). We are fix us some drinks, kick back with some cigars and just enjoy the album all the way through.

Anyways, I streamed from Pandora the songs I've heard live from my Atlanta shows. I love it all, but I'm gonna be picky on two things:

1. Why I Am- One of my favorites, but Dave's vocal inflection is surprisingly weak on the first verse. It sounds like he got punched in the nose, his eyes are watering, and he's trying not to cry (Some of you are probably like WTF he just say?). Where's the strength I heard on the live versions?? I would of made him do another track if I was RC.

2. Spaceman- Miss my horns section and trumpet solo, but Barnes rocks on it.

That's my two cents. Just thought I would give it even though it's not much.

HOLY SHIT! SEVEN IS AWESOME!!!

I really thought it was going to suck, based on The April Sessions...

I'm glad I was wrong!!!!!!!!!!

Very suprising. I didn't know if I liked the way he sang but it sounds much better on the album.

Let "You and Me" play through and at the end you get a little jam(a la Last Stop reprise) with Roi and Carter, nothing great but it is good to hear his sweet sax.

Listened to it two times through now, and there are really only two negatives that I have about BWGK:

1. First and foremost, unlike any other albums including Some Devil, it seems that the lyrics are almost ad-lib. Add baby here, add learn to fly here, add god/devil here, add baby here.

2. I'm still wondering how exactly Roi is "All over this album." Some of the songs are great, others are simply OK, but if Roi were still alive today he would have put this album next to UTTAD, Crash, and BTCS. No doubt of that in my mind.

Besides that, long live the Groo-Grux King!!!

This new album is so great. I am very pleased. That being said. Where the hell is Boyd on this album? Most of the strings sound like synth stuff.

I was very disappointed with My Baby Blue on the studio version. The April sessions version is just awesome and more intimate and just a better song. I hate the symphony in the BGWK version or what ever is in the background.

I think this is better than Busted Stuff.

Not any real stinkers on here at all... all the songs are solid at least. Should develop really well live.

Only thing that's really missing is I'd like some little jams on a couple songs... and the obvious point that they didn't have Coffin fill in the parts where LeRoi would have been.

I'm thinking "Dive In" should have been swapped out with "Idea of You" at this point as well. That sounds like a "Some Devil" song.

So pretty good album, just disappointing because if they would go in after 6 months on the road and rerecord all these songs it would be easily be "Big 3" quality.

On first pass of the entire album, my favorite was Time Bomb. Great ANGRY dave lyrics for the 2nd half of the song.

Seven & Squirm appear to be huge winners as well. Didn't really like Lying in the Hands of God, but maybe after a few more listens.....

I'm impressed. Nothing really strikes me as shit. This didn't happen on Stand Up.

I feel like Alligator Pie is the weakest of the songs, but it could really evolve live so I won't throw it under the bus yet.

The strong points: LITHOG, Squirm, and Time Bomb.

These songs are monsters. I also feel like Dive In is under rated, but hey, we all have our own opinions.

Big improvement over the April Sessions.

After one listen this album is mindblowingly majestic. Just so good, DMB did so damn well. These songs wlll work live, I know they'll jam em out. Just such a good job by the band.

Dave is clearly the MVP, he re-found his amazing song writing skills and really penned some fantastic lyrics. Just a great job.

Little review:

Grux- GREAT start to the album, pretty fantastic stuff by LeRoi, I'm glad they put this on the album.

Shake Me Like A Monkey- Awesomely groovy. This will be such a badass song live, I can hear the crowd belting out to this one, "yours yours YEAHHHH!" Kind of reminds me of Too Much, just a little bit. Really fun and groovy I love it.

Funny The Way It Is- Obviously a great song. Listen to the song and just stare at the album artwork, it's cool.

Lying In The Hands Of God- One of the best DMB tunes in the last 10 years. What LeRoi, Tim, and Dave do is outsanding. Unbelievable lyrics. Good back up vocals. Lots of good layers, defiantly BTCS- esque. Amazing stuff, sounds like a late night song, with someone drinking coffee. Yes, I am strange. Carter is also pretty agressive which realy works even though this song is a bit slower. the song kind of sounds ancient (compliement)

Why I Am- Definatly better live. They kinda goofed in the studio maybe a bit. Still a great tune! But they might have overthought this one. I love the energy it has live. :tim:

Dive In- Nice feel good song, Carter does a very good job. Good beach song. Kind of a Floyd-like ending which is pretty cool. Very good song, sounds like Fonz played some keys.

Spaceman- Very nice song, great Dave lyrics for sure. Really thoughtful great tune. Daves vocals are so comforting.

Squirm- Kickass cross between Last Stop and Minarets, slowed down. Just a really really good song. This is why I'm so glad Tim is on this album, just his subtle parts in this song really make it.

Alligator Pie- Nasty song. I love when they break it down in this one, Barnes is fantastic on the banjo. Good energy on this.

Seven- So damn good in the studio, absolutly kick ass!!! Vocals are good. Nice horns really good song, much better in the studio. Tim does really awesome.

Time Bomb- Damn good song, builds up then Dave just rocks out. I agree with the Dreaming Tree and Halloween comparisons. Sounds like an older DMB rock song.

My Baby Blue- I love the pretty intro, and the strings are classic. At the very it reminded me of JTR, very lightly. This sounds like an E1 spot to me. Good vocals too. I like it because its nice and soft.

You and Me- I like it, sounds like a love song, sounds like two people escaping together or something, really got in my head.

Overall, Big Whiskey and The GrooGrux King is a fantastic album. Really cool stuff. I really really miss Boyd's presence on this album though, it seems like he really didn't step it up on this one. This is more of a rockish album rather than a jammy album. I kinda miss the jams though, I think that they can jam these songs out live though, we'll see. But I am very impressed at this bands revival, they put together a masterpiece. They worked hard on it and it was all worth it. Rest in peace LeRoi Moore, DMB is still going strong thanks to all of his great influence.

DMB 4 Life.

Definitely agree about SMLAM sounding like Too Much, especially with the horns part and the outro jam.

Lyrically I think this album is one of the weakest but the ideas behind the lyrics may be one of the strongest. This is the most edgy lyric album to date, with almost every song having a political, environmental, religious, and sexual theme to it...just a a redundant usage of words and lyrics.

Boyd plays throughout all of these songs, a few of them you can't hear him at all but Why I Am for instance you can hear Boyd playing along. Personally, I think RC probably had a hand in the lowering and sometimes completely deleting the sound of Boyd's violin. Which is a shame because that cat exudes energy.

I can't believe people are complaining bout this album! I mean come on...we could have easily gotten Stand Up 2. And as far as the lyrics being weak, puhlease..... just take a close, close listen to My Baby Blue and You And Me. Some of the best lyrics ever laid down my Dave.

The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of sax. As a "tribute" album for 'Roi, I expected to hear a bit more and Boyd definitely is limited on this album (largely due in part to Tim's solos I think). I think live, he will be prevelant. And these songs are going to fucking rock live.

Please, please, please, let go of BTCS. Stop the comparison to everything DMB puts out to that album. There will never be another BTCS. And there should never be. What blows my mind is, there is music on this album i.e. "Squirm", and "Time Bomb" that could be on that album! All bands evolve, it would be so boring if they didn't. We as a fan base have to evolve with them. I love all the new music. I love this album. It is a breath of fresh air and beyond its time. Musically, lyrically, there is a a lot of classic DMB sound on it and mixing in their new sound. It's a perfect blend of both worlds. This band is still on top of its game and putting out great music. These songs are going to be amazing live. Enjoy this moment. LONG LIVE DMB!

Anyone think that My Baby Blue has a little bit of "Falling off the Roof" feel to it also?

Yeah I thought that a few days ago listening to the April Sessions version of it. Don't know if anyone else thinks it to, but at least you aren't alone!

Hell yeah, I couldn't figure it out when I first listened to it but I had the pleasure of seeing FOTR live so it stuck out

Jesus, I listened to this album earlier completely sober from all substances and I instantly loved it. However, now that I have a few gin and tonics in me and a good high.... this is absolutely insane. :mon: :dbud:

i think the reason i wasnt digging this album from the getgo is cause it is A TON of music in only 13 songs and it all came at me at once ... i still think its over produced and theres too much going on and not enough dave rhythm guitar on it or boyd

when i first listened to it i thought the exact same thing. there is a whole lot of stuff going on on each track and on some songs it makes it harder to hear certain instruments. i like the cd, but what's going to really prove that these songs are great is hearing them live and seeing what the band will do once they're away from all the "produced" sound of the studio.

This album is fuckign incredible- honestly, I thought it was gonna be shit. After hearing Seven, Funny the Way It Is, Spaceman and Why I am, though those songs aren't bad I felt they didn't fit the band and was scared the whole album would be like those songs but I was wrong (thank god). I fucking love this album. I think Shake Me Like a Monkey is my favorite, I literally just woke up about 10 minutes ago and came on the computer to listen to it

IDK about you guys but I am really liking the return of Boyd to his symphonic roots, instead of the usual country-esque violin sounds. Do not get me wrong, his playing style is solely him and I absolutely love when he jams out but his sound on this album is the first of its kind for him, and in the end that is pretty cool.

From Dave's Twitter:

In LA. Big Strings!
10:23 PM Mar 6th from Twitterrific

One can only assume that's an orchestra...right?

I think Boyd probably wrote the orchestra parts and played with them, so his presence very much there on this album. I think I agree with the guy that mentioned symphonic roots. For me, big strings give the album a sort of majestic, epic feel that you wouldn't get if it was just Boyd. Also, a lot of these songs just don't call for violin jams. For those looking for a less-subtle Boyd factor and monster BT jams, don't worry...it's coming when they play these songs live. Think Alligator Pie...

1. First and foremost, unlike any other albums including Some Devil, it seems that the lyrics are almost ad-lib. Add baby here, add learn to fly here, add god/devil here, add baby here.

took the words right out of my brain. This is the first album that the lyrics might be the weakest part. Kind of suprising. I mean they are more interesting then SU's lyrics but still some are definately questionable. I'd have to say even some of the Everyday songs have more polished lyrics. Seems like the lyrics aren't really Dave's normal style on some songs, maybe that is him trying to evolve, maybe the song writing was impacted by Roi's passing. It's not all bad just differant, weird, etc. maybe it'll grow on me.

Overall, the album is a step in the right direction from Stand Up, that is for sure. I am convinced our high expectations/anticipations may be tainting our impressions from this album. DMB isn't going to write another BTCS, Crash, or even UTTAD. And we shouldn't expect them too. They are going to grow and change and to think they will have another album like the first three is probably wishful thinking. But there will still be gems even from the Stand Ups and the Everydays and once in awhile they might even suprise us like BWGK.

I'm gonna review the album...so beware all you people holding out till 6/2. Also, this was the random things that I thought during the first listening, sent over AIM to a buddy of mine..so it maybe a bit sporadic.

Grux
Absolutly beautiful. Perfect way for this album to start.

Shake Me
Very nice Groove…and hilarious Dave lyrics. Love this song already.

Funny the Way it is(skipped because it's gotten 29529 listens and I've made my comments on it.)

Lying in the hands of God
this song is absolutely beautiful..
save you sermons for someone thats afraid to love.
very very nice, vocal layering..sounds like a phenomenal choir.

Why I am
Why I am studio...oh yeah baby. got me dancing in my chair. Love this even more than the first time I heard it. Love the intro and the lyrics. Miss you Roi!

Spaceman
Omg...Spaceman studio is the poo Love the guitar riff. haha sweet banjo riff after spaceman

Squirm
Squirm is intense and phenomenal. Love the middle eastern/minarets feel hahahahahaha. they put a fruit vendor at the end of squirm.

Alligator Pie
its' def not a ballad(that’s the way the lyrics read in my head)it's cornbreadish..forealthere’s a howdown at the house!!breakdown! now it's a slow dance hoedown
What a perfect bridge. this is gonna be a beast live
the hippies gonna go nuts when they hear this shizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Seven
Seven is freakin epic..and i'm 4 seconds in…if it can sound like this live..it might grow on me.

Time Bomb
Love the way this song starts off especially Roi..Love the music and the slowness…really like the keys and they are gonna be missed live. not digging the david bowie effects in the middle. love the strings throughout.…the end is mind blowing though. Officially dancing all over the place…

My Baby Blue
Loving baby blue…sounds like sister riff..or something off winn Dixie..butterflyish..Amazing lyrics. Glad to see a sweet love song not about oral. Really really liking the strings. Really hope to see this E1. Really really really hoping. This type of song is what I’ve been waiting to hear come out of the studio for about 10 years.

You And Me
Very John mayer start. Like it a lot. Really dig the guitar riff. Very cute idea for a song dave. FLYYYY! Amazing chorus, little cheesy but still very nice musically. “eyes closed we gonna spin through the stars” It’s nice to hear him talk about his whole family in a song not just his wife. Sweet bridge musical interlude. Love the guitar here as well. This is gonna be a fun one to play.

A lot more coulda been done with this, although I like Roi ending the CD as well as beginning. They should have developed this a whole whole lot more.

There is certainly a lot going on with this album, but so far I have to believe both Why I Am and Spaceman studio versions are superior to the live ones, I also believe this album has some special songs such as Alligator Pie, Seven, and LITHOG, but I do disagree with everyone that seems to be crowning Squirm as the best song on the album, maybe I will feel differently once it is played live, but I dont love it, overall I think the album is very very good and glad it had made its way out :dbud:

I have tons of things running through my head (all positive) but I need to simplify - here are my top three comments right now:

1> Cavallo is really good at his job. W O W ! I am so happy they joined forces.

2> That early video with Dave talking about Carter's drumming is spot on. Carter absolutely owns this thing - he does things that I cannot literally fathom. INFRICKINSANE!!!
"Well, that's not how I would approach drumming. You wouldn't, because you can't." Still super funny and so, so true.

3> I am really digging the 'BIG STRINGS' - I usually don't like the big, orchestra, over-produced sound, but it works really well on this. (REF: see item 1 :)) This leads to live problems, but I have faith these boys can make it all work.

In summary, I am super duper happy!

THIS WAS DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT.

Once again, thank you dmb.

PS - 'Grux' has a total Bleeding Gums Murphy thing going on - it gives me wicked, wicked chills. I love you, Roi.

Having an orchestra play along with potentially Boyd written material would be something really special I think, and over-production is having looping machine-gun fire at the beginning of ABI, not an orchestra joining in. (though it can be done distastefully at times)

In a perfectly awesome DMB world though, Boyd would record every part the string section would play, then play the bites overlapping all at once to present the orchestra sound but it would only be Boyd playing! Ahh....

i'm with you williee...squirm is a fine song, but i definitely wouldn't call it the best. now, i love just about all of them, but some of them sound so different that i don't think i can compare them and pick out a favorite from the whole cd...

So what I've gathered is that there were the April Sessions, and then Pandora had a close but slightly unfinished copy as well. Is that correct?

Keboe
05-29-2009, 12:44 AM
Well from just listening to Spaceman... I didn't hear much of a difference at all from the Pandora version and the CD. Maybe the quality is a little better but it's not a huge difference like the April Sessions and The Pandora version was.

NicKosior740
05-29-2009, 12:45 AM
I wouldn't say slightly unfinished, although maybe it was...

It's just so low quality streaming, like 96 I think? You really can't hear all that there is in the album...

I'd say the biggest differences are the "background" of Squirm, so many crazy layers, seriously...

And Dive In...

I do think that Spaceman "stands out" a little more though...
