I love that guitar.
and yes they still make this type of guitar im sure if you go to music shops and ask too look at Gibson Chet Atkins SST They can either order one for you or point you in a direction to get one.. Every music shop I have ever visited the people who worked there are extremely nice and they make sure you get what your looking for.

I was just curious if anyone knew if you can still purchase a Chet SST acoustic/electric guitar anywhere? I searched musiciansfriend.com but they stopped carrying it a couple of months ago....any one got an idea of where to find one?

The ony music equipment store i have ever seen in a mall was Media play.. And they dont just sell equipment they are more for cds/dvds and shirts.
Your lucky to have a music equipment store in a mall. Makes shopping so much easier.

Its been yrs, why do you think dave ditched the ax?

I just believe he got tired of it, and moved on to a better sounding guitar. Personally I loved how the chet sounded, it gave DMB a unique sound.

I am sure he also got a nice chuck of cash when Taylor guitars designed the Dave Matthews signature model.

Taylor never made a signature model for Dave. It was Martin Guitars that did. Dave mostly plays that signature model during his D&T shows. Also, the Martin made an appearance on his earlier Listener Supported DVD.

Probabaly sitting ni his basement somewhere. Idk.
Also, the chet isnt a great sounding guitar at all compared to what he uses now. I think as the bands sound evolved Dave had to switch it up. The Chet was great for the old school DMB sound. Shit cut right through everything.

i think he quite playing them when gibson quite making them which was around 2000 and that is the last time he was seen with one

He's said that he used it because it was able to "cut through" the band's sound, but he feels more confident in himself now and doesn't feel like he needs that anymore.

Do you have a link to the interview for this? It would be pretty cool to have a look.

I don't; it's been quite a few years, and I don't even remember where it was. I want to say it was in a magazine. I'll snoop around and see if I can't find it.

Here's a Guitar World interview from 1999 in which Dave & Tim talk about the benefits of using the Chet (second-to-last question).
I'm having trouble finding one in which he talks about why he stopped using it. I'll keep looking, though.

i wish daves guitar would be turned up louder , it gets drowned out alot by the other instruments in the jams... tahts why i miss the chet atkins so much , it really cut through the air so well...
i enjoy listening to dave jam as well i really cant hear his guitar too well at all unless i try real hard ......anyone else agree????
example (made me think of it last night)
i was watching piedmont park dvd and during dreaming tree jam
right when the jam slows down and dave is playing a little riff u can hear it but its so sick it needs to be louder by a bit...

absolutely agree, I would be doing snoopy dances if he wiped out the old chet, beleive me. i couldn't agree more with you about the volume of his guitar now-a-days. i literally can't hear the guitar at all in some songs, its like they have too much extra noise.
the volume of his guitar has really lowered in late years, anyone know why?
ive noticed it too they should definitley turn it up
but also do remember piedmonts mixing is terrible

i know we all love daves riffs, but it all has to fit into a fine tuned machine. you think you cant hear dave but you would definently know it if he stopped playing, or his guitar went out as in live earth. The beauty of the band is that when they jam they can all play together to make an amazing and unique sound, which escapes most jam bands that aren't very coherant. They all have there individual momements, but if you have ever played in a band you would know that the music hits you the hardest when you and your band mates instruments act as one. <--damn that sounds corny

Good call, I was noticing this a little bit as well. I definitely agree that Dave's guitar is getting drowned out and I would like to hear it more during the shows.

I agree. Sometimes when I'm listening, I try to listen for him and and I'm like ok ok where's dave? Then I have trouble singling him out. I'd like him turned up a bit.

ehh i dont know about the chet - i dont mind it so much on songs where he's just strumming chords (teo step, say goodbye) but on songs where he's picking individual notes (seek up, rhyme & reason) i think the guitar sounds very weak.
i definitely agree that his guitar needs to be turned up though - it needs to have more punch. i dont know if it was just the mixing, but the Taylor 714 that dave used during 2000 (used on LT3 & LT11) sounds great and has a great pop to it - listen to PNP > Rapunzel on both releases to see what Im talking about.
The Taylor 914 is a beautiful guitar, but im starting to think it has too deep of a sound especially when its competeing with an electric guitar, 2 horns, base and drums. I wouldn't mind seeing the 714 come back haha

yea i just wish it was turned up a little more too many other instruments to deal with ...
esp with songs like grey street where boyd is playing the same exact chords to open as dave and his violin is so loud....u can hear every lick of the violin and trumpet..need to turn them down a bit and dave up

yeah especially when butch was around dave might as well have been standing there without a guitar at some points. timmy is turned way up, but ill take timmy overpowering dave instead of butch.
chets never coming back btw

well i dont think they even make the model anymore. and second, it hasnt been used in 8 years. theres no reason for dave to go back to that guitar. it fit with dmbs old sound but he has zero reason to bring it back.
do you think there is a good chance of it coming back?

i think it could make a return....you just never know. im not saying it will, but anything is possible, especially after seeing all that has happened this tour.

funny that trax 3 is mentioned, i just listened to the whole thing last night again, and yea I really like that sound a lot, it works in everything...I remember hartford night 1 2006 his guitar was near impossible to hear...I agree that the chet days are over, but they should try something else

people might not like this, but i think one of the reasons dave has his guitar turned down is because he's not as comfortable with it as he used to be. i'm not sure, but i think he is concentrating more on vocals than on guitar work. i think the guitar is becoming more of a prop...though i might be wrong
me no music instrument ..expert ...guy.... but seems to me they could boost it more ... gooder
but I'm amazed sometimes at how well his part does pick up, like his slamming during ASTB
Dreaming Tree at Piedmont is amazing!

I never really understood how Dave played that friggin' thing. I have picked them up now and again in guitar stores and have never cared for them. It's just too much like an electric guitar. It's more like an electric guitar with thicker strings than anything else, and with Dave's percussive style (and personally on my own) I've always preferred the full on acoustic. If nothing more than for the depth of the instrument.
As far as turning Dave up .... I think you're jumbling one of Dave's old quotes about the Chet which was that it was good at cutting through the mix, not cutting through the air. Cutting through the air really doesn't mean anything unless he's throwing it at someone. And in that case I would definitely take the chet over anything else. Catch something with the butt-end of that thing and it will ruin their week. As for whether or not it would be noticeable to keep him at the same level and switch guitars? *Shrug* Turning him up will probably do the trick.
Though it would be a bit nostalgic for him to play it every now and then, kind of like throwing Halloween into a random show mid-set.

yea i didnt mean literally through the air... i meant through the sound of the other instruments in the air... come on .. anyways the chet has a very different sound than the taylor hes been playing it would make a difference even if he didnt turn up the volume.... but i really do wish they would turn his guitar up a couple notches..

if anything id guess hes more comfortable now because hes better at guitar now than hes ever been... his voice is slowly going though , if you watch a video from say 1999 or so and watch or listen to a show from today he was hitting alot more high notes back in the day and taking more risks now hes staying in a lower range and octave

Dave better remember his roots and not sell out by using it as a prop. you play the damn guitar or you dont

yeah this tour, I've never really said it, but I feel Dave became a little lazier with his guitar playing...I dunno, thats probably because I just cant hear him as well you know...but Dave's been excellent vocally this year and not to mention his antics, dancing to Cornbread and Thank You - awesome. But he's not using it as a prop, that dude still can blow me away on guitar

I think lazier is a good word to use for it this summer. There was a time when they played Too Much at Hershey this year that Dave kinda just walked around on stage with the guitar on his head for about 10 seconds. I mean, it was funny as hell to see him do that, but Too Much without him playing the Too Much riff is just weird. His vocal are definitely sounding good this year, though. And not that his guitar playing is anything less than it's ever been, but he seems to want to dance more this year.
