View Full Version : Hootie or DMB, who's better? Who will last?

Okay okay, this is a bit nostagic and not serious, cause I'm sure everyone who saw this had to be doing the Moe "Waaaaaaaaaaaa!?" (from the Simpsons) right about then.
But yeah, I was readin another post on here and it made me recall all the way back to 95 when I was lookin around in my daily newspaper and there was this article about "The Dave Matthews Band or Hootie and the Blowfish, who's better? Who will Last?" The whole reason for it was that both Dave's new album "Crash" and Hootie's new album "Fair Weather Johnson" were coming out one week apart. Both had great sales on their first albums, both had a grass roots upbringing and both had the same kind of musical vibe about them (I guess I see it...kinda) so it was a logical choice for a comparison article.
And the rest is history. "Crash" was awesome and "Fair Weather Johnson" was about as satisfying as my last dump (What? I had a lot of fiber). I wanted my damn money back after buying it. Dave's a huge hit and one of the greatest live concert performers of all time and Hootie (without his blowfish) is singin about how juicy delicious Burger Kings new tender crisp bacon cheddar ranch burger is. Oh Hootie, how the mighty have fallen.
So, whats the point of all this you ask? Okay, think back to 95 to the height of Hootie popularity when "Cracked Rear View" came out (no denying he was very popular, you couldn't get away from it on the radio) and the still oncoming discovery of Dave, and be honest, who did you like better at the time? Who did you think would last? Who did you listen to all the time? Had you even heard of Dave?

Matthew

PS. I really wish I could find that article online, but alas the internet in 95 wasn't exactly what it is. So that will never happen.

Hmmmm 95.... I remeber hearing satellite and ants marching alot, didn't really get into DMB until 99 ish... I was in my metallica days back then.(wow 10 years ago ??? holy fuck). As for Hootie, uhm they suck except for that Bryan Wilson song.Cause i read a bio- on him and it was cool that they did a song about him being isolated from the beach boys etc.

My freshman year roommate was all about Metallica and I was all about Dave. It was really funny to hear both of our music playin at the same time tryin to drown the others out. I'd have to say he won usually. But I'm still a fan of Dave and he hates Metallica now, so I win in the end.

This is a thread for the old-skoolers.

I wasn't fully introduced to DMB until 96, and I wasn't listening to Hootie instead--which kind of leaves me out of this.

In the summer of 95 I was listening to the eek-a-mouse and the Grateful Dead, pretending my parents would let me see the Dead live. Then Jerry died. I wasn't really listening to the radio, if I was it was alternative. I was also pretty into No Doubt and saw their Tragic Kingdom tour when Weezer opened for them. (maybe this was 96?)

Here's a billboard chart (http://www.rockonthenet.com/archive/1995/bbyearend.htm) for 1995.

My parents would listen to Hootie, not that I paid much attention. But to DMB, I pay full attention. So maybe that shows I think DMB's better. :)

I believe that Brian Wilson song you aretalkin about was the BareNaked Ladies song. (unless hootie did one about the deranged old timer as well...) yeah, BNL is awesome, and if you liked that song then you should pick up the "Rock Spectacle" album. They put on a great show and they are the band that eventually led me down the golden path to DMB. Not that the two are very similar at all, but usually if someone likes one, they like the other.

I was only 8 years old in 95 but i do remember driving in the car with my parents and hearing Crash and Hootie songs and i usta think they were the same band. and then in 2000 when i Woke up and realized how amazing DMB is i went to a concert and didnt even know that DMB wrote Ants Marching.. i actualy thought it was a Hootie song... so at the concert i finaly realized the band i usta think was Hootie, was actualy DMB.... and the rest is history...wow.. I LOVE DMB:biggrin:

Yeah I wasn't listening to either or band back then. I actually thought DMB was kinda nasty because somebody told me that Crash song was about sex and shit... and when you're like only 9, you think sex is gross. lol And as for Hootie, you're right, he's a washout, I'm sure Brooke Burke got paid more for just saying "Come and Get It" at the end of the Burger King commercial than Hootie got for his whole song throughout it. But on a lighter note, I did realize that in that one Hootie song, he quoted a Bob Dylan song, and that's pretty freaking awesome becausE Bobbie D is da man!!!

My Rock Specatcle cd is MIA, little down about that. I was into both DMB and BNL back in the day. BNL shows were great, their BNL rap they'd do at the end of shows was phenomenal, though haven't really been much of a fan since Maroon...

I was 23 and so tired of life  when I bought my first dmb album 10 years ago. I've never considered buying any hootie crap. I'm glad hootie is in that BK commercial. If the cheese fits.........

I believe when Hootie quoted Bob Dylan in their song that they actually got in trouble for it. "Shot a man named grey, took his wife to italy, she inherited a million bucks and when she died, it came to me." I think that was the line. Yeah, they didn't ask for permission on that apparently.

At the time I honestly thought Hootie would last longer. I had only heard Satellite and I loved that song, but, Hootie had like 4 singles from that one album that were almost all #1. I still always like U2 and Toad the Wet Sprocket better, and Tears for Fears, but, I thought Hootie would keep going, and going.....and they didn't.

i was in denali national park alaska in 95. everyone up there was about the dead, then jerry passed on. man, people were holdin' candle light vigils for him up there. i would listen to a little bit of hootie, just because it was acoustic-like. i also llistened to the boys on the side soundtrack a lot (chicks rockin'). it was a very "hippie-like" summer for me up there. i like hootie, but i will have to say, once i heard DMB's crash, it was all over with. that one played NON STOP. so i guess for me, i listened to everything until i got a hold of some DMB, and it has been an uphill love affair for me:) !!!

Apparently Glenn Phillips, the lead singer, is doing stuff still, travelling and doing that song. I think he's performed it with John Mayer even. They had a couple albums after that one("Walk On The Ocean" was on Fear, the whole album is amazing). Their song "Brother" was on the Friends soundtrack, but, after that, didn't hear much from them. They were and still are a great band. I can listen to the whole "Fear" album over and over again.

I have a few Hootie cds; but, they can't compare to DMB. To me Hootie and Blowfish have a lot of top 40's style songs.

Same here man, now its a complete struggle for me to like anything OTHER than Dave. Its practically all I've listened to since 99 when Napster came about . 4 past girlfriends have been Dave converted basically because thats all I played and they were forced to listen to him whenever we went for a drive or basically any other time we listened to music.

I love hootie and all (I had darius rucker's name all over my trapper-keeper in middle school!)...but if I EVER see dave singinging a song in a cowboy outfit about a dumb sandwich, i'm gonna be angry.......actually, if it were just for fun and not for a commercial, that might be funny as hell.
