Is it too early to start thinking about this?

A lot of Beck fans were pretty excited to find out that the Dust Brothers' influence on Guerro was a return to the sound of Odelay after the marked departure in Sea Change.

Rock history is speckled with other cases of artists who have released an album that is "outside their style" but then returned to their more identifiable if not more popular (with their core fans) sound.

DMB has clearly shifted away from the sound of BTCS, even though Dave has stated that it is their best work yet. For the next album, do you think we'll see a return to BTCS/Crash/etc. now that they've had an opportunity to mix in a hip-hop sound, or will they continue in this new direction?

Tough one.... It depends on how much popularity this new album draws in, and if the band likes that kind of "rockstar status" if you will.As long as the leader of the band is loyal to his true fans we will like what he puts out reguardless ,we'll just have to addapt to a different sound even if the NEXT NEXT album is unlike the BTCS,UTTAD, and Crash type sound(although i wish it is/was gonna be )...I thought DMB was leaning towards becoming a sell out after the release of everyday(electric guitar?) and having to see them on TRL:thumbsdow. But i was wrong, after hearing the Everyday songs in concert and actually listening to them they grew on me and i addapted to the new sound. "You never know" the NEXT NEXT album could be like a busted stuff 2 er something, just another album full of outtakes etc. like: SUAD,JTR,GGT,sugarwill, now that would be awesome!...But i would love to see DMB return back to there BTCS UTTAD Roots...So its basically up in the air, and this thread should be in a disscussion and debate collum!...The only way I can see DMB/dave selling out/drifting away from the core fan-base, and just being in it for the $$$, is if he stopped touring and i saw him in a mcdonalds or pepsi commercial.

* Although i could see him in a Rogaine* commercial:lol:

Or or how about a Burger King commercial!? Now THAT would rock! Dave with a cowboy hat on and a lasso and his guitar singin about a yummy tender crisp bacon cheddar ranch burger with all kinds of hot chicks in the background shakin their country asses to Dave's great rip off a true american classic song "Big Rock Candy Mountain".
Hold on a second! Whats that you say? Hootie already did that!? Oh Hootie what happened to ya?

Lol I remember when "Crash" came out and about the same week Hooties second CD "Fair Weather Johnson" came out and there were all kinds of articles goin "Who's better, who's better? Who will last?" It cracks me up to think about those articles now, cause no doubt Hootie won. I mean, why else would he get sweet ass Burger King commercials? He must be rollin in the dough. (sarcasm alert)

The next album will feature me. I will be the live dancer, during which time my shoes will squeak. Now, don't be dirty-minded folks. :D You will only see me if you get the dual disc.

I like how this sprouted out of this post into its own thread.:D

I would be horrified if DMB played a fast food commercial--but I don't think they would. I would guess the band would consider this to be a bad thing. DMB has had its own (some might say questionable) history of endorsement / marketing campaigns though.

They've sold licensing to various movies, and Boyd's done backpack and Butterfinger ads. (though i believe he donated proceeds)

Some bands also have to take these commercial opportunities seriously. Is selling a license of your band's song to the OC, or Smallville worse than a fast food chain? The Shins licensed "New Slang" to McDonalds (http://www.montrealmirror.com/2005/041405/music1.html) for three times more than what they were origonally offered for the tune. It gave them an opportunity to chill out for a few years without having to worry about money. It seems like this industry is a big dollars game, with the need for hyper online, print and radio advertising to launch new bands.

I'd love to see an article written by our new soon to be formed writers group on this subject.

All I know is that i don`t get a feeling with this album and that`s the first one for me. I try to see it as a chance. Getting away from DMB for a while and than in 3 years step into my favorite music store grab the new DMB called "Good, good times" and get blown awaagain:hypnodisk

lillywhite comes back (please, please - just to make it old school - includes segues and random background noises like ping pong and beepers); steve harris online as well
butch taylor, of course
tim reynolds guest
bela fleck guest
greg howard and john d'earth guests
mark roebuck - background vocals (oh wow, so cool)
mary chapin carpenter or some other beautifully voiced woman
track list (all studio recordings done at haunted hollow in no particular order):

Good Good Time
Joy Ride
Sugar Will
Crazy-Easy
Recently
Granny
Help Myself (why not, they've been playing it again)
JTR (i know they don't like the song, but it'd be cool to hear again)
Raven (maybe...)
Sweet up and Down (not sure about this one)
Build you a House (maybe...)
Monkey Man (maybe...)
Spotlight tease (please, please, please, track number 60 or something, just as a joke :) )
#36 (segue)
#40 (segue)

Notes - songs can jam, but not over jam. no beat box, but carter still drives the funk. guests don't have to play on every song.

any comments? probably won't ever happen, but wow, what a disc.

considering Dave went out of his way to publicly praise Batson at the Roseland, and the band's general approval of this album, I unfortunately don't anticipate a big change for the next one. (out of curiousity, I wonder whether Batson understood why the crowd was singing "fools rush in" and "#36" (if he knows what that is) in the middle of DMB's performance)... But Dave once dedicated a performance of Grey Street to Steve Harris, and look where that got him... so I may be wrong.

Nevertheless, the band has made it clear that they have personal conflicts in working with Lillywhite, and although he's clearly produced the band's best work, the chances they will turn 180 degrees at the height of their fame are about zero. If they did, it would prove a lot to me, and I'm sure, to many of their core fans.

So, I really don't see them going back to their classic selves if this stuff sells.

But here's where my criticism is different-- I don't really care if they are making music to sell more music-- they're people too, who need to make a living, and I think that the new fans attracted to Stand Up will be able to see their brilliance in older albums. But the band hasn't wisely thought about what music would sell-- and considering the mass approval of Jack Johnson, and dare I say, John Mayer--- Acoustic works! The original, vintage, awesome DMB would blow those guys out of the water.

This shift to a hip-hoppish sound is really a miscalculation (if they think that it will make them sell more records).

If Lillywhite is out, perhaps, a revolutionary live album of new music would be possible... I know Springsteen and the Doors have had their live music played as radio edits...

I think DMB was getting new ideas and a new perspective on how to record a good album. There is no doubt this album is better than everyday and possibly busted stuff. In the next album i would look for them to re-record some of the songs they didnt put on this album( check out the jam at the end of video 5). I wouldnt doubt if dmb went back to their roots for their next album but i wouldnt hold my breate about it being released until 2007-08.

-The idea about it being a live recorded album is a great idea. We know how the boys sound live and new music recorded live with state of the art equipment would blow everyone out the water.

When it comes down to whether or not the band will return to their "roots" on their next album, I'd like to see and hear it happen as much as everybody else. Whether they'll actually move in that direction or not though is another thing. When I think about Stand Up, I see it as an experiment, which is my optimistic approach to seeing the band return to the days of UTTAD. However, the other side of me sees it as a transition, and that the band has evolved in the last 14 years. Whether or not it's an experimentation or a slight change in musical style; we'll have to wait and see.

I have this cracked out theory that we might get some of the B-sides from Stand Up. I cant forget that they created so many songs (which I am quite sure/hope are really good) and so many were not included! I think that if the band gets some good attention with Stand Up over the summer we may expect to see some more tracks delivered soon (end of the summer or fall). How cool would it be to get some unfinished material leaked onto the internet. Kind of like what the Lillywhite Sessions did for Everyday. Just a dream.

Also, what does it mean by Take One in the standup dvd? I was thinking that the next album might be called Stand Up part 2. Which would make sense because they really liked the studio process with Baston. Also, it could mean that we might get to see some more of the songs (B-sides?) a little later on. Either way the band would of caught the mistake if it was not supposed to be there. Any one have any takes on this?

Ib.

I also think that they will re-record some of the songs that never made it. IF you listen to all 5 videos and the dvd you will hear some bad ass jams that arent even on the cd

yeah, i think i remember reading that they had like 20 some songs written at haunted hollow, so maybe you're right. and weren't there rumors the album was originally called "stand up: act one"....might signify another set of songs.
and what about the RCA contract? is that over now that they have 6 studio albums, does anyone know?

It's kind of hard when they have around 11-14 songs to put on an album to turn down songs like Shotgun, Cornbread, 27, Break Free, Kill the King???, etc. and to think that those songs would still most likely not even make up half of the album puts a smile on my face..

Eh Hee (I refuse to call it anything other than what Dave calls it lol) would be sexual full band most definitely..

Come on. Your secret is safe between you, me and WDS. Honest.

I'd hope the next album includes some road-tested material, which historically has resulted in stronger albums. I'm assuming their next album will be less pop based on Cornbread, 27 and Eh Hee/Ayhee being anything but pop. If not this album, then hopefully an album following their release from their current contract.
