BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's High Tribunal on Sunday found Saddam Hussein guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to hang for the 1982 killing of 148 Shiites in the city of Dujail. The visibly shaken former leader shouted "God is great!"

The appeal process has now been set in motion.
Within 10 days, the court will forward the cases of Hussein and three other defendants to the appellate chamber of the Iraqi High Tribunal. Appeals of death penalties and life sentences are automatic.
Within 20 days after the appeals are made, the prosecution and the defense must submit their documents to the appellate chamber.

Well, to begin with, it could happen in a matter of months if the appelant court, a mandatory process in Iraq, finds no wrongdoing.

Personally, I am against the death penalty, not because of religious reasons though. If they kill Saddam, which they most likely will, he will become a Martyr. It will increase tensions in Iraq. Sunnis will start killing Shiites in larger numbers, and vice versa. This is not what the world needs.
